BASECAMP Traineeship
“The Basecamp Traineeship is a year full of personal growth, friendship and adventure. I highly recommend the incredible experience to anyone who enjoys the outdoors, serving the community and loves Jesus Christ!”
BASECAMP in mountaineering terms is a place where climbers set up a temporary community for shelter, preparation and planning, equipping and acclimatisation, and the start of an exciting adventure. It is a place to come alongside other climbers and adventurers who are embarking on a similar expedition. It is at BASECAMP where climbers engage the skills and insights of others more experienced in what is ahead to help guide them safely to the summit and back.
Baptist Camping Victoria’s BASECAMP has a similar purpose. It is a place designed for young people to come and establish a temporary community to develop, challenge and ultimately explore their God-given futures with other likeminded people. It is a place of safety, of equipping and preparation – and definitely the start of an exciting adventure!
The traineeship has been running since 2007 with many young people completing the program. Armed with a greater sense of self and gained qualification, these graduates have gone on to successful careers in education, youth work, social work, outdoor recreation and full-time ministry roles in the Church.
What's included
Over the course of the year BASECAMP trainees will complete a Certification 4 in Outdoor Leadership with Box Hill Institute , focusing on outdoor activity training to both guide and instructor levels.
Trainees will learn skills in areas including bush-walking, canoeing, mountain biking, challenge course (High Ropes), risk management, navigation and trip planning.
Trainees will also develop skills and experience in ministry, delivering camps through school holiday periods across our four unique campsites.
The ministry experience and training will be complimented by undertaking two Diploma level units in theology, and regular group devotions to support personal faith development.
What are we looking for?
Successful applicants will need to profess a living faith, be regularly attending Church, and have a desire to deepen their faith. Even though we are a Baptist organisation, we welcome applications from all denominations.
Applicants should also have a real love for the outdoors, as they will be spending a lot of time in it. Each successful applicant will be comprehensively trained and assessed in onsite activities as well as through a number of off-site overnight trips.
The application process involves completing an Application Form which outlines the potential trainees’ education and employment history, faith journey, and references. This is followed by a face to face interview with our Ministry Team.
Where will I live?
All trainees live onsite in a share house set-up for them exclusively at Camp Wilkin in Anglesea, Victoria.
Anglesea is located 112 km from Melbourne via Geelong on the Great Ocean Road, and only 20mins from Torquay.
Only 800m from the beautiful heath lands of Anglesea and walks in the Otway National Park, Camp Wilkin is just 1.2 km from the Anglesea shops and a similar distance from the main surf beach.
